In 2013 words such as “nude”, “free xxx” and “teen” were amongst the top searched items on a search engine based in Malta.
These adult searches don’t come as a surprise to many as this is not the first time sex related words have featured heavily in such searches. Offline sex is still very much a taboo word in Malta.
With a population which is said to be more than 95% Catholic and a culture that is very much predominantly patriarchal, sex and everything else to do with it, is kept under wraps. Sexual education is also scarce and there still seems to be this idea that the pull out method is the safest way of contraception, completely forgetting worries other than pregnancy such as sexually transmitted diseases.
This whole scenario seems to change online. Sexual restrictions are left at the computer log in screen and a whole new world is unleashed. The word “nude” and “free xxx” took the top first two spots respectively with the word “teen” coming in at fourth place just after “Facebook“.
But online is not the only place to get sex in Malta. Prostitution, is not illegal, even though many mistakenly think it is. In Malta only loitering is considered to be a criminal offence.
Strip clubs do not exist in Malta but a more sober version can be found mainly in the streets of Paceville. These are known as Gentlemen’s Clubs and they have only been around for a few years. Every few months there seems to be some kind of controversy surrounding these clubs and many are pushing for better regulation. Nudity in Malta is a public offence, meaning that in these Gentlemen’s Clubs, girls are not allowed to strip down, so instead girls just dance around in skimpy outfits. Having said that, if you want nudity many of the girls will offer you a private dance upon entrance so you are sure not to leave unsatisfied if you want to see that little bit extra.
Similar to what happens online, Paceville is the place where every sexual taboo falls right off. At night, this little locality is flooded with people who just want to have a good time. Mostly frequented by teens and under 30s, in both winter and summer, the place swarms with girls whose dress sense leaves very little to the imagination and guys who gladly enjoy the show.
Sex in Malta is not that hard to find if you know where to look, and it seems like there are more than a few people looking. A little hint? I’d look around those asian massage parlours which have mushroomed all over Malta.
